Anne N. Hirshfield, PhD

As associate vice president for health research, compliance, and technology transfer, Dr. Hirshfield is responsible for leading the spectrum of health research at The George Washington University Medical Center and advancing the University as a top-tier research institution. She also ensures that all investigations at GW are carried out ethically and safely in accordance with regulations and standards. Dr. Hirshfield is also a professor of Anatomy and Regenerative Biology, and serves on the board of the HIV/AIDS institute at GW.

Prior to coming to GW, Dr. Hirshfield was professor of Anatomy and assistant dean for research at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. She conducted studies on the development and function of the mammalian ovary and was an NIH-funded principal investigator for more than 20 years. She has been internationally recognized for her work on the physiological control of ovarian function, ovarian aging, and reproductive toxicology.

In addition to her research, Dr. Hirshfield made major contributions to the University of Maryland School of Medicine in the realms of teaching and administration. She taught Anatomy and Embryology to first year medical students for many years and was honored by awards from her students. Under her leadership, the University of Maryland streamlined and strengthened its human research protections program and became the second institution in the nation to implement an electronic, paperless process for the program. She garnered millions of dollars for the University from federal agencies and corporate sponsors to expand the research infrastructure and she created numerous intramural programs to enhance research productivity.

Dr. Hirshfield is a graduate of Swarthmore College and received her PhD from the University of Michigan.
