In Memoriam Dr. Cyrus Katzen (May 1, 1918 - July 12, 2009)

The George Washington Medical Faculty Associates (MFA) wishes to express its deepest condolences to the family of Dr. Cyrus Katzen, philanthropist and co-founder of the Dr. Cyrus and Myrtle Katzen Cancer Research Center. Cyrus and Myrtle Katzen pledged $10 million in the fall of 2008 to establish a center dedicated to advancing cancer research and providing superior clinical care and education in the fight against cancer. Cyrus and Myrtle Katzen’s pledge represents the largest ever received by GW. Read more

Statement from GW President Steven Knapp on the Death of Dr. Cyrus Katzen

The entire George Washington community is deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Cyrus Katzen, a long-time friend whose family was connected to GW in countless ways. The work he supported, through the annual Cancer Gala and, most recently, the creation of the Dr. Cyrus and Myrtle Katzen Cancer Research Center, has touched the lives of many within the GW family and across the greater Washington region. He will be sorely missed, but his legacy will live on through the healing and discovery that his generosity has made possible.

Cyrus and Myrtle Katzen Give a Record $10 Million Gift to Advance Cancer Initiatives at The George Washington University Medical Center

In what represents the largest individual gift ever to The George Washington University and its Medical Center, Cyrus and Myrtle Katzen have committed $10 million to advance a wide range of cancer initiatives. “I am deeply grateful for this historic leadership gift from a native Washingtonian family that has been personally affected by this devastating disease,” said GW President Steven Knapp. “The Katzens’ generosity will greatly accelerate our ability to conduct the kind of research that can truly make a difference to cancer prevention and treatment.” Read more
